What is a Florida BDI Course?
If you are a Florida driver and looking to boost your skills, or just take a refresher driving course, then Florida BDI training is for you. And if you’ve been in an accident that was your fault, BDI is definitely for you.
A BDI course, or Basic Driver Improvement, is a 4-hour defensive driving course that is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). The course covers defensive driving techniques and behaviors to help keep you road-safe and point-free, including:
- Basic Driver Knowledge
- Behind the Wheel Risk Control
- Proper Driving Procedures
- Major Causes of Driving Accidents
- Consequences for DUI Conviction
- How to React Safely to Driving Situations
- Common Distractions Florida Drivers Face
DHSMV-approved courses are valid all throughout Florida, in all 67 counties.
Is Florida BDI for Me?
There are many reasons to sign up for Basic Driver Improvement training. If you’ve received a traffic citation for a non-criminal moving violation, you may want to enroll to erase the points off your record. Some people take the course to obtain a discount on their insurance policy (check with your insurance company, as BDI discounts are entirely at their discretion).
There are also several instances where you must take the course in order to retain your license. If you were at fault in an accident where someone was hospitalized, or if you had 2 crashes within 2 years and the damage was greater than $500, you will need to complete a BDI course.
If you fall into any of these categories, then a Florida BDI course is for you. You’re only allowed to take BDI once a year, though, and there’s a lifetime maximum of 5 times. So if you’re on your second violation in 12 months, or your 6th overall, do yourself a favor—take the bus.
How Does BDI Help?
Obviously, if you’re told you must take a Florida BDI course due to accidents or a DUI, you’re doing it so you can keep your driver’s license valid. But BDI helps you in several other ways, as well. It helps you maintain your status as a safe driver—this means keeping points off of your Florida driver’s license, withholding court judgments, and even preventing your insurance premiums from going up.
In addition to all that, a Basic Driver Improvement online training course improves your driving skills. This makes you a smarter and more confident motorist.
When you think about it, there’s never a bad reason to improve your driving skills. Even if you aren’t obligated by the court to take the course, nor looking for an insurance discount, a BDI course can still be a good idea. We all could benefit from a refresher from time to time. And the online opportunities that are available today make it easier than ever to be a better, safer, and more aware driver.
